Lyric is an international journal of poetry and creative exchange
published twice yearly. We work hard to present newer writers along with more
established figures. However, writers are strongly encouraged to review a recent
issue of the magazine before submitting their work. Unpublished work only.
Simultaneous submissions okay if notified. Lyric
does not accept emailed submissions.
Poetry
First and foremost, we are looking for poetry that has strong musicality and
lyricism. We are open to all styles, including longer poems and lyrical
narratives. We tend to publish more than one poem by any given author and try to
find a group of poems that demonstrates both range and consistency of voice.
Please submit 3-6 poems along with a brief biography.
Translations
We are committed to including translations of poetry in each issue and are
always looking for quality translations of contemporary world poetry. All above
guidelines for poetry apply. We are not interested in new translations of
well-known poets who are already amply translated into English. Rather, we want
to be introduced to contemporary writers from outside our knowledge base. Please
submit 3-6 translations along with brief biographies for the poet and the
translator.
Essays
We seek lyric essays that use poetic logic and relate a mosaic of ideas. The
topic of the essay need not be about poetry, but it should be informed by poetry
in some way. Please do not send academic articles. Essays should be no more than
2,500 words.
Interviews
We are also looking for thought-provoking interviews with contemporary poets.
The most successful interview arises out of the interviewer’s own passion for
the poet’s work and has the feel of an engaging conversation between friends.
Past interviews include Gerald Stern, Patricia Hampl, and Maurice Manning.
Please send the full edited interview along with brief biographies for all
participants.
Reviews
Lyric does not currently accept unsolicited reviews. However, if you are
interested in becoming a reviewer, please send a cover letter with a dossier of
your past work.
